[N]et [N]eutrality

[W]hen Net Neutrality was first discussed in class, I was a little confused at what it was talking about. I have been accessing the internet since I was a young child, and couldn’t believe that your network provider could have the ability to redirect you to a completely different website, through the power of the internet. All throughout school, I always wondered why internet explorer was never available. Every time I tried to access it, “Page Not Found” would pop up on my computer screen, and redirect me to Modzilla, formally known as FireFox. I never knew what the cause of this was until it was brought up in my class by my Professor.
[N]et Neutrality is about the choice to choose your own content, and to browse whatever you would like on the internet, at the same consistent speed each time. Right now, major companies are trying to make the internet a “buyers market” meaning that people with the money should get the high-speed, and the people who may just the normal standardized price should get a slower speed. Right now, major industries do not like the idea of net neutrality, because it means that everyone has an equal right to the internet. What companies want to do is create a faster lane on the internet, and only people who pay them lots of money are allowed to use it.
[I] think that our internet in today’s society is probably one of the most important tools, used by everyone. It was an amazing boom in technology, and is available worldwide to billions of people. I think that if we lose net neutrality the internet will slowly begin to crumble, and the amount of access to the internet is going to decrease dramatically. Just think for a second, how much do you use the internet? I can honestly tell you that I use the internet everyday, whether it is checking my email, or completing research on an assignment, I have become reluctant on the internet as a valuable source of internet, and without the same guarantee of access that I have to it now, I think that I would be at a huge disadvantage.
[A]fter Watching YouTube videos in class about net neutrality, it has made me realize that we need to do something now about this. What amazes me is that I had never even heard about this before. All throughout high school, I was blinded by the fact that the internet was indeed working, but the service provider was redirecting me to completely different sites, in an attempt for me to bring them more money. It as if the computer had been “hacked” into, and someone was controlling my every move, as if I was a pon on a chessboard. I was being directed by someone else, in an attempt to stop me from accessing a variety of web browsers, and websites.
[I]n conclusion, I don’t think that people realize where are internet is heading. We have already started to see the effects of not having net neutrality, and things are only going to get worse. When I sat down and was talking to my family about this, they suggested that I should be the one to make a difference with my group of friends, and that we should bring this awareness to more and more people in an attempt to stop the attempts to get rid of net neutrality. When I asked my parents about how they felt about it, they told me that they didn’t care. That if I wanted to let this go past me, it would be my generation that would be suffering the consequences, not them. It was then that I decided that I was going to do something about it, because I am not about to let some of the highest most profitable organizations take over anything else!

[G]et [E]ducated [!]

I think that being well educated in Media awareness is a very important thing! I think that you need to be consciously aware of the media influences around you, and understand why advertisers do the things they do. During the week of November 3rd – 7th, educators worldwide will join together to raise awareness about media.
Living in Guelph my entire life, I went to a local high school, Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute, where very minimal media courses were offered. I did however participate in one of the media courses, but felt that I was not learning the fundamentals of media, on a global perspective. I feel that not enough education is being done in schools about media, and I feel that the education board really needs to step up their game. I feel that media is probably one of the most important things in today’s society, and if the right awareness is not being addressed, then things are going to continue to be misread, and misinterpreted. Take for example the Dove Natural Beauty Campaign. This campaign was created to address self-esteem issues in young girls worldwide, and to help them learn to love their bodies, but more importantly love themselves.
When Professor Lipton brought up the point that in your high school English classes they are supposed to include a percentage of media into the course, I was surprised to hear this. I do not recall participating in any media related topics throughout any of my English classes over my four years of being at the same high school. I feel that some schools have decided to neglect this completely from their programs simply because they feel it does not “fit” with the rest of the course content, and I would have to strongly disagree. I feel that with media being added into classes as a requirement is an amazing idea, and I feel that schools are going to help create awareness to the many issues that are being discussed on a daily basis. Media is beginning to control what is left of our deranged society, and if people are not well educated, how is that going to affect them as participants within society?
Participating in media week for me was very difficult, because all in all, I did not have a lot of experiences. I think the problem is that I am still struggling to find my standpoint on what I think media really means to me. I know that there is definition, after definition, and term, after term, but for me to really understand something; I need to come up with my own definition. Media to me occurs every second of everyday, and you see it almost everywhere. Whether you are browsing the internet, or watching t.v, you are consuming yourself into the media of today’s world.
In conclusion, I feel that our society is neglecting aspects of media, simply because they don’t want to believe it. Let’s look at Net Neutrality again for a second. If people truly thought that their internet was going to be shut down due to aspects dealing with Net Neutrality, you can bet that you would have a lot more people participating in some sort of awareness to help keep it. The thing is with our society today, people are afraid to speak up, and let their voices be herd because we have been conformed not to. We have been told to let the “big guys” handle it. Well I think we need to take a stance together, and make media more apparent in our everyday lives.

[W]ith all of these movies out today, can you only imagine the money that they are bringing in yearly? It is absolutely crazy to think that one major organization can be bringing out so many videos, at an uncontrollable pace. Did you know that all of these movies where Disney? I can honestly tell you, I had no idea. When I think about Disney it really makes me disgusted, and I’m just being honest. It’s almost as if it is one big subliminal message to get into the minds of young children, and even adults. It brings in uncontrollable amounts of money in every year! Kids go wild to see someone dressed up as Belle, or even Cinderella, and they pay an awful lot just to see them. I can honestly say when I was a kid, Disney was my life! My parents took me to Disney in the year 2000, the big millennium, and it honestly will be something I will remember forever! Below is an except from http://courseweb.edteched.uottawa.ca/CMN1120/mediaownership.htm which shows the cross ownership of Disney! I think you will be a little surprised at what you see!

[W]hen you put all of this into consideration, of comparing it to today's society it really makes you think who is really running this world? When you think of all the crosslinks between companies, everything seems to be owned by something, or someone. So really, who owns us? You may think that is a ridiculous question but when you really think about it, it gives you an eerie feeling.

[S]o you tell me, do you still feel the same way about Disney as you did before? Because honestly I can tell you, my view of them has been changed completely! There is so many branches off of Disney that it is difficult to follow, it really makes you wonder what's next?

[I]n [A] [B]it [O]f [A] [J]am ~ [C]ulture [J]amming

[A]s I was thinking about how culture jamming affects society today, there were so many things that flashed through my mind. Media has affected a wide range of cultures through media advertising, and through use of some commercial products, I feel advertisers are trying to make a statement. As I took the time to glance through some of today’s marketing magazines, I came across several ads’ that displayed attributes of culture jamming. We know culture jamming usually takes on the form of turning media against its intended purpose; using the media to satirize that which it was originally intended to portray.

[A]bove is four pictures in which I thought were good representations of images that display a good representation of what culture jamming is. The First image is a picture of a father and son, who are promoting “Obay”. I think that the point of this advertisement is that all children need to obey their fathers, and that whatever your father says goes. I think that this ad is discriminating in the way that children should not have a say or an opinion. All children always ask their parents the question “why?” and parents always respond with “because I said do”. This being displayed on the bottom of the add just goes to foreshadow the representation of all adults treating their kids with disrespect, and that all adults are right, and the children are wrong.
[T]he second picture is also advertising for “Obay”, but has two girls, a mother and daughter. Again we are seeing the same representation that the first ad has. When I really thought about these ads’ it almost seemed as if it was culture jamming, trying to go against culture jamming. What I mean by this is that “Obay” is not a real product, and thus by using media as a way to show the contradictions some parents have with their children; it is if they are almost contradicting themselves. I know this might sound a little confusing, but I am doing my best to describe it to you, and if you really focus on both of the images, you will see what I am talking about.
[I] think with the way that gas prices are heading right now, the third image is a great example of culture jamming. Everyone who drives would know how expensive it is becoming. With booming gas prices, and the price to insure, and own a car can be absolutely ridiculous. We know that between all the places that distribute gas, Esso and Petro Canada, are two of the industries that control what the cost of gas is, and is going to continue to be, hence the dollar signs in place of the two s’.
[T]he fourth and final picture, I feel is one of the best examples of culture jamming that I have come across yet. Not only does this picture reference to war, but it also references to apple, which is one of the biggest marketing companies out there. In this add, there is a person that is holding a “wip” like object that is standing in a position that looks as if he is entering a battle. At the bottom it shows the statistics for how many people have been killed, looking at both the American soldiers and the Iraqis’ killed. The only thing I don’t really understand about this add, is why they chose to use the IPod commercial in order to represent the war? Perhaps because the silhouette represents the shadows and the history the soldiers are leaving behind?
[A]fter I found all of these pictures, I really sat down and thought about how it relates to todays medical profession. Know knowing that "Obay" is not a real drug, what they are trying to say through these add's is that medication is the solution to everything in todays society. Kids are being put on anti-depressants at such young ages, and in the long run, the sideeffects arent really worth it. This also relates back to sociology; children are taught not to ask questions, they are told what to do, and they are told to obay their elders, hence the "Obay" in the add. I really think that these adds are an effective marketing technique, and I just hope that this message gets across to many people, so we can begin to see a change.
[I]n conclusion Culture jamming has become a very important part of our society, and I feel that it has done a very good job at showing the contradictions through a media perspective.

[S]hopaholics [B]eware ! ~ [B]uy [N]othing [D]ay

[W]hen I first heard about “Buy Nothing Day” I really wasn’t sure of what to think about the whole situation. I mean, I really sat down and tried to think of my spending habits, and the results were not good. I have come to the conclusion, that I am a Shopaholic! I have never even heard about this big event until this year, and even being an avid shopper, I agree with it completely! Our society has turned into nothing other than a consumers market.
[W]orking in retail, I have come into contact with peoples spending habits every day, so I know peoples limits, and what they are willing to risk in order to get that 64.99 hoodie, or those 180.00 dress shoes that will make their outfit complete. I work in two, totally different environments; Campus Crew which is casual clothing, directed towards students, and Aldo which is a shoe store for men and women ranging from teenagers to adults. I have worked in retail for almost 2 years now, so the amount of exposure I have to peoples shopping experiences is quite high.
[I] took the time to review the amount of money that came into both stores last year on November 28th, and I was very disappointed that more people didn’t comply with buying nothing. Campus Crew sold 1,234.97 and Aldo sold 3,432.34, both surpassing their designated goal for that day. It really is crazy to think of what would happen if everyone in the world participated, and bought nothing for one entire day. Like seriously think about it, what would happen? It really is something that puzzles you, and makes you really think. But in reality, it would be impossible to get the entire world to participate in an event like this because people like to take their own stance in society, which for the most part is nothing.
[O]n November 28th, I am going to buy absolutely nothing! I am in strong support of this, and I am going to encourage my friends to do the same. I will encourage people during my shift at Campus Crew that their old sweater will work just fine, and that they don’t need our new style just to fit in. I am going to tell people about the difference they are making, just by not shopping on this one particular day. I am pretty sure my manager is not going to like it, but if I can make a difference only for one day, you bet I am going to do my darn best to follow through with it.
[I]n conclusion, I cannot believe how so many people can become label whores. You have so many people that are dedicated to brands like Hollister and Abercrombie, just because of its name! It seriously is crazy to think that people are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on just one t-shirt, for a logo that is the size of a penny. Buy nothing day is your way of showing the world that you don’t need to purchase something every day, and that you have the willpower not too. So everyone join me November 28th, as we take this journey of keeping money in our wallets, and the products in the consumer’s hands!

[M]edia [A]nd [W]arfare

[M]ass media has taken a new role in warfare. No longer is it used strictly for direct propaganda purposes, but it also possesses the ability to subliminally promote patriotism and fear; the fuel to gain the support amongst the masses for a war over seas. Like most large-scale public/private organizations, major networks such as CNN, BBC and NBC have their own agendas to follow. That said, it's important to note these bias, considering these corporations control what the general public is able to see. In the United States, the war in the Middle East is a major topic for news networks. With a nation filled with people constantly in fear for their national security as well as their troops overseas, it is an ideal opportunity for news networks to gain financially off of their fear and insecurity. To guarantee this financial capitol, it's very important that these corporations maintain the fear and uncertainty that keeps viewers returning to their screens.
[M]edia sources such as big budget films; albums and books can have a similar effect on the public, but can also promote patriotism amongst the masses. The recent release of 300 is a film created at an ideal time. It portrays a small army moving into the Middle-east to fight against a tyrannical power. While the immediate understanding of this movie is strictly based around action, thrill and entertainment, ultimately the film becomes a piece of propaganda promoting patriotism and confidence that the "mystery army" from the west will dominate the middle-eastern threat. Although, this may be a positive confidence re-enforcement in times of low moral for a country in defence of its security, when a war is created for the wrong reasons, this kind of media creates confusion amongst the masses, and phases out awareness.
[M]edia also can become a very important tool to raise public awareness. Wars such as the civil war in Rwanda have had much positive media involvement. Although in this case, the majority of media coverage was after the fact, the release of Hotel Rwanda created a large buzz around the mass genocide that took place in Africa. The film not only educated the public about the horrific event, but it created more public interest around other conflicts in Africa; the film even started a foundation led by lead actor Don Cheadle. This type of media coverage for wars is of the utmost importance to not only spread awareness but also eventually gain empathy from other nations and inevitably their support.

[T]he [A]merican [P]residential [E]lection [:] [A] [L]ook [A]t [M]y [P]olitical [V]iews

[W]hen it comes to my attitude towards political views I would have to say that the two major influences upon me is my family and the mass-media. Since I am only 17, and do not turn 18 until October 31, I will not get a chance to vote in the upcoming election. This is disappointing to me because I have always been one to follow the election closely, and watch the national debates on television. I feel that having an age restriction of 18 to vote is a little high, considering as students we begin to learn it in the later stages of our primary education.
[T]o Begin, I would say my family is the most influential when it comes to my political views. Even though I have not reached the voting age, when election’s come, it usually contributes to the majority of the conversations that take place in my household, as I have 4 eligible voters living there. My parents have never really closely followed the election for themselves; it’s usually my sisters that do all the research. I never really did understand why my parents never did a lot of research. Don’t they want the best future possible for me and my sisters? Although I know my parents care for me very much it is just frustrating that I am not able to voice my opinion till I am 18.
[T]he media has also had a major influence towards my political views. Everywhere you go there is signs posted saying “Vote Green” or “Vote Liberal” and you see them nearly every day. As well there are commercials on tv, broadcasting over the radio and internet, as well as flyers that come to your home. When election time comes, you are bombarded with everyone else’s political views. It is hard then to vote without having something to persuade you towards a certain party.
[W]hen I Compare the Canadian election, to the American election it really is similar in a variety of ways. Although the Americans are voting for one individual to run their entire country, we are essentially doing the same, just there are a lot more steps in getting there. When you think of the process it takes to become a potential candidate we all know that you need to have a certain status within society in order to be in the running. We have seen this in the past with George Bush, and almost in this recent election with Hilary Clinton.
[I]n Conclusion, voting has not become a huge part of my life just yet, as I am unable to vote. Through my family and mass media I have been able to see the affects that influence someone to vote a particular way. I have also been able to see the affects of roles within a society, and status among individuals living within the society. My final words would have to be if you don’t care about health care, the economy, global warming, your future, then don’t vote.

* [T]ake a look at this you-tube video (I have attached the link below). The majority of you have probably already seen it, but I think it is a great video just before the upcoming election.
